About Me

Hello! My name is Michael Moates and I have been in the mental health field for 7 years in the subspeciality fields of psychology, behavior analysis, mental health counseling and substance abuse. I started out at the bottom working hands on with patients as a paraprofessional working my way up to the graduate level therapist I am today.

I am currently a Candidate for the Doctor of Education (EdD) at Fielding Graduate University and expect to graduate in 2023. I was also recently accepted into a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) program at California Southern University. I got my Master of Arts degree with an area of concentration in psychology from Liberty University in 2021.

I am licensed to practice various mental health practices in the States of Alaska, Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Indiana, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

I also engage in mental health practice in the following states based on a citation of state law: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

I am certified by the Qualified Applied Behavior Analysis Credentialing Board (QABA) as a Qualified Behavior Analyst (QBA) since December of 2021. In addition, he has been certified by the International Behavior Analysis Organization (IBAO) as a International Behavior Analyst (IBA) since January of 2022.

I specialize in neurodevelopmental and learning disabilities, personality disorders, anxiety/panic disorders, trauma, depressive disorders, eating disorders, psychosis, attention deficit, and addiction. I utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Applied Behavior Analysis, Christian Counseling, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Interpersonal therapy, Positive Psychology, Psychodynamic therapy, and Psychological Testing / Evaluation.

When engaging with a client, I endeavor to meet them where they are in life. During the first session, I will do an evaluation and get a history of the client. In addition, we complete a risk assessment, talk about triggers, and boundaries. Finally, I go over informed consent and clinic policies. During the second session, if needed, I will do screening for mental diagnosis. Finally, during the third session, I work with the client to complete goals for therapy treatment. After the third session, I begin using the goals we created and the therapeutic interventions to help the client achieve the most authentic, motivated, and successful self.

I am passionate about understanding “the why” a particular behavior is happening. I also like tracking the behavior through routine screenings to use evidence based treatments and support the concept that therapy is working effectively or make changes as needed.

I leave you with one of my favorite quotes:
“Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose.”
President Lyndon B. Johnson, CMDR, US Navy (ret.)

My favorite bible verse:
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.”
1 Corinthians 13:4
